Snoring and OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) affects millions of people. Treatment for sufferers has traditionally been surgical or adjunctive, with C-PAP machines being regularly prescribed for nighttime wear to maintain the integrity of the airway during sleep. Many patients find that the CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) is intolerable during sleep, and as a result become non-compliant with treatment and receive no benefit or improvement for their airway issues and see no improvement in their quality of life.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment
According to Wikipedia:
Sleep apnea (or sleep apnoea in British English) is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Each episode, called an apnea (Greek: ἄπνοια (ápnoia), from α- (a-), privative, πνέειν (pnéein), to breathe), lasts long enough so that one or more breaths are missed, and such episodes occur repeatedly throughout sleep. The standard definition of any apneic event includes a minimum 10 second interval between breaths, with either a neurological arousal (a 3-second or greater shift in EEG frequency, measured at C3, C4, O1, or O2), a blood oxygen desaturation of 3-4% or greater, or both arousal and desaturation. Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram, or a “Sleep Study”.

An awakening is taking place to the importance of sleep disorders and their relationships to our general health. One important and common disorder is snoring. It affects approximately 82 million Americans (40% of middle-aged men and 30% of middle-aged females). Snoring may be an annoying social problem and a subject for humor, but at its worst may be a reflection of a significant medical problem — obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is defined as a cessation of breathing/airflow for 10 seconds or more (full obstruction of the airway), which may occur many times during the evening. Snoring is a narrowing of the upper airway, which leads to the vibration of the pharyngeal (throat) soft tissues (partial obstruction of the airway).
Health issues that are associated with such sleep disorders for inadequate sleep ranges from depression and anxiety to high blood pressure, pulmonary hypertension, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and even stroke, all of which are estimated to cost 3.4 Billion dollars in medical cost annually.
Communication between the physician and dentist in managing patients with snoring and sleep apnea is vitally important. Such technology as; precision appliances, Rhinometry , Pharyngometry, ApneaLink screening, and more, allow the dentist and physician to deliver more effective care.
